Vampires seem to be on their way out but Zombies are everywhere, and very, very popular. So much so that the  Government of the United States' Center for Disease Control (CDC) has decided to have some fun and join the bandwagon.  They have released their guide to Zombie Preparedness. From their website: As it turns out what first began as a tongue in cheek campaign to engage new audiences with preparedness messages has proven to be a very effective platform. We continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via Zombie Preparedness; and as our own director, Dr. Ali Khan, notes, "If you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack." So please log on, get a kit, make a plan, and be prepared!"

There's a blog with preparedness tips and tricks, free posters (you can download the PDFs), and a Graphic Novel/Novella with more helpful info!

In all library seriousness, consider a zombie program for teens. You could prepare a kit, watch a zombie movie, read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for book club, search pinterest for zombie crafts, snacks and activities. Have some fun!

In 2010, to celebrate the contributions and achievements of aboriginal people, the Federal Government declared June as National Aboriginal History Month, with June 21 of each year being National Aboriginal Day. Is there something you can do at your library to celebrate? Is there a local author or storyteller you could host? Crafts you could do? How about a book display? If you don’t have many aboriginal themed books, member libraries can request one of Peace Library System’s First Nations Blocks - they work the same way as the large print and Christmas blocks.

For more information and ideas, visit:
  • The Federal Government’s Aboriginal History Month page
  • Aboriginal Canada Portal for information and resources
  • Aboriginal Canada Portal's list of aboriginal artists, authors, actors and musicians
  • Aboriginal Canada Portal's resources for kids
