While most of us aren’t going to require the level of rigidity, dedication, and craft of organizing the cables in and around our desk that the phone company has, there are a few easy tips to keeping the cables in your workspace neat and clean. Follow the ABCs of cabling:
At this point I should talk about using power-bars. If you look on the back of your power-bar, you will notice that it (most likely) has two little holes with sliders for wall-mounting. Properly wall-mounting a power-bar can be tricky, but here is a simple trick to use for easy mounting: take a photocopy of the backside of the power-bar to make a mounting template then use some appropriately sized screws (and a level) to mount it. The reason for mounting a power-bar on a fixed surface such as the underside of a desk is because it reduces the chance that someone or something will push against the on/off button on the power-bar itself. It also lets you elevate the power cords from the floor, keeping them clean and free of dust bunnies.
Organizing our cabling most likely won’t bestow upon us any sort of divine revelation or the ancient wisdom of going into our spiritual caves to find our power animals, but there is definitely a zen-like serenity that gently blankets one after a good de-cluttering. Go forth Peace Porridgers: may your Velcro loops be strong, your power-bars be level, and your RJ-45 clips be whole.
